The Amateurs av John Niven

There were men around the town who he had known his whole life whose surnames he could not remember. But he could tell you shot by shot how Arnold Palmer put together a 67 at Royal Troon on a summer Saturday nearly a half century ago."

Golfen betyder mycket för romanens huvudperson, Gary Irvine, som när berättelsen tar sin början är en hackare av Guds nåde (och, som så många sådana, ohjäpligt förälskad i det spel som inte älskar honom tillbaka). Mer än så tänker jag inte avslöja.

Citaten ovan visar, som Scotsman skrev i sin anmälan av boken, att "he gets the golf right".  Han - John Niven - är skotte med ett förflutet i musikbranschen. "The Amateurs" är hans andra roman. Om Wodehouse skrivit om golf och människor  idag hade det kanske blivit någonting i stil med Nivens prosa? Hur som helst så är den här boken bland det mest underhållande jag läst i genren.
